CUISINE

Discover the authentic freshness of the local specialities and get to know Croatia one delicious bite at the time.

This is your chance to discover the amazing local gastronomy. The setting is perfect. Just sit down, relax, and prepare for the feast for all the senses.

Hvar is best known for its trademark Gregada – a hearty fish stew made with several species of rockfish, potatoes, and onions stewed in water and white wine. A distinctly Croatian Bouillabaisse.

These are only the basic ingredients, a foundation if you will. Each town, each village, and indeed, each household on Hvar has their own, a closely guarded recipe for this traditional dish. In the more complex versions, you will often find premium white fish, clams, scampi, squid, various types of herbs, and more.

Freshly caught fish from the Adriatic Sea always makes for a real feast. You can order it prepared in many ways, but the most authentic and probably the tastiest way to experience is just having it charcoal grilled with some rosemary, garlic and olive oil.

Seafood risotto, pasta with clams and buzara – mussels or scampi stewed in a red tomato wine sauce are all special experiences you will remember long after your holiday is over.

When you crave for a meat dish, you simply must try peka, lamb or veal with potatoes and herbs cooked to succulent tenderness under the bell.

Hvar Wine Tours

Hvar Wine tours

With a wine heritage pre-dating the arrival of the Ancient Greeks, and vineyards exposed to the most sun of any island in Europe, it is hardly surprising that the island of Hvar’s wine story is attracting increasing international attention.

Add to the mix some of Croatia’s most innovative and charismatic winemakers, whose wines are exported as far away as China, California and Singapore, and whose medal-winning tradition also spans the globe, and it is not hard to understand why Hvar wine tourism on Croatia’s premier island – the island of lavender – is on the rise.

In an age of globalisation, let’s not forget the indigenous varieties which make Hvar unique. Plavac Mali is the pride of Dalmatia’s reds, a relative of Zinfandel, but don’t miss the whites, including Bogdanusa, which only grows on Hvar and translates as ‘a gift from God’.

Join us and our passionate and experienced local team, as we guide you through more than 2000 years of wine history, through the vineyards and konobas of some of Croatia’s most fascinating producers, including the first certified organic Plavac Mali in the world (PZ Svirce), the only Grand Cru in the country (Zlatan Otok), Croatia’s leading boutique winemaker (Ivo Dubokovic), and the Romanesque cellars of Andro Tomic. Winemakers who are our friends and neighbours, offering you a unique insight into Hvar wine culture.

Hvar Wine Tours offer the original and most comprehensive wine tours on Hvar, either by speedboat or comfortable Jeep, and our guides will bring you to taste the wine of course, but will also bring out the heritage and magic of a wine story
and heritage which is older than Christianity itself.
